1. 1. Name the main characteristics of the
Constitution of 1931
The main characteristics were:
- It established freedom of speech and religion
-It gave women the right to vote for the first time
-It declared equality for all Spanish citizens and
took away the special status of Spanish nobility
-It limited the powers of the Catholic Church
-It allowed more regional autonomy
2. Explain
how the Second Republic was proclaimed.
In April 1931, Alfonso XIII agreed to hold municipal
elections. The parties that favoured a Republic won. The second republic was
proclaimed in in 1931 and it lasted until 1936. The monarchy was abolished and
Alfonso XIII went into exile.
3. Explain
the Spanish Civil War
a) When did
it start?
It started in July 1936
b) How did it
start?
The number of protests against
the government increased. There was a military coup attempt by Generals Mola,
Sanjurjo and Franco. It failed but it was the beginning of the Civil War. They split
Spain in two sides: the Republicans and the rebels who were led by Franco.
c) How long
did it last?
It lasted three years, from July 1936 to April 1939
d) How did it
develop?
The rebels first took control of Spain`s African
colonies and the Republicans held the main cities in the centre, east and north
of the country. Franco’s troops continued to advance and control more
territory. Franco finally took Madrid in 1936 and the rebels won the war.
e) When did
it end?
It ended in April 1939
